A Dallas County neighborhood, University Park has a population of over 25,000 and is primarily residential. About five miles to the north of Dallas, it covers 3.7 square miles, 0.27% of which is water. It is bordered on all sides by Dallas, except to the south, where Highland Park can be found, making University Park a city within a city. Established in 1924, the population has remained stable and consistent since the 40s.
The town is home to Southern Methodist University, and it is one of the most highly educated areas in the United States. Known for its range of attractive housing styles and stunning parks, the city boasts a vast selection of activities, including business, shopping, recreational, and cultural opportunities. Things to Do
The Dallas Museum of Art delivers an encyclopedia-like collection of work with items ranging from the ancient world to the present. In the heart of the country’s biggest art district, it was formed in 1903 and provides over 25,000 pieces of art for each visitor to enjoy and learn about. Kalita Humphreys Theater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, opened in 1959 and was named for an actress. In 2007, the theater was established as a historical landmark of Dallas City.
Named after the current University Park Mayor, James B. Burleson, Burleson Park was dedicated in September of 1948. Today, it boasts a baseball and softball diamond with bleachers, a soccer practice field, two lighted tennis courts equipped with fiberglass practice boards, a basketball court, and a playground. In addition to the sports fields, it is a good place to relax and enjoy nature.
Originally opened in 1953 under the name Northcrest Park, Coffee Park was rededicated in 1979 and renamed in honor of the city’s longest-tenured mayor, Roy C. Coffee. Visitors enjoy an extensive trail system with depictions of University Park’s history along the paths. The park also features picnic facilities, decorative fencing, a playground, baseball and soccer facilities, and a sculpture of Roy Coffee.
Tucked onto the SMU campus, the George W. Bush Presidential Center isn't your typical library. This complex houses both the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, offering a glimpse into the 43rd president's time in office and his path before the White House.
